OK I’m only posting this deal with a major warning. GameFly is finally switching over the Direct2Drive service to their GameFly Digital Game service. (see article)

Right now, it’s business as usual; you can continue to pre-order and buy games just like you do today. We’ll keep you informed and send you more details when everything is ready to go. In the meantime, your Direct2Drive account will work as it does now, and we will fully support new releases as usual.

At the beginning of next year, we’ll migrate all Direct2Drive services to GameFly. We’ll take care of everything for you – transferring your account and purchase history to GameFly so you can pick up right where you left off (you’ll just need to reset your password for security). If you already have a GameFly account, we’ll combine the two.

There are a couple things you can do now to ensure a smooth transition:1. Download your favorite game purchases from Direct2Drive. We plan to have as many game files as possible available on GameFly. Just to be sure, please download your old game files before the transition.2. Download all of your non-game files (like Prima Guides). These will not be available on GameFly after the transition.

Once transferred, you’ll be able to access your account with one login across GameFly’s entire suite of integrated services: The GameFly Client, Web site, and Mobile App.

The major problem is GameFly doesn’t have all the same distribution contracts that D2D had. So it’s possible you’ll lose access to your games temporarily and possibly forever. That’s why they’re telling you to go in and backup any files while you still can. Game guides will not be available at all so definitely back those up. When the contracts do get signed the games will be added to the service and they should be available to you again via their client software, which is very similar to Steam.

However, I recommend you 1) backup all your games and non-game files on the D2D service. 2) Only purchase games or DLC that can be activated on another service. IE Steamworks games or games that use Origin. Dragon Age II for example can be activated on Origin.

Right now Dragon Age II is on sale for $5.00. This is at the D2D US site only. It comes with The Black Emporium dlc for the game. Might be best to wait for a GOTY/Complete edition though.
