The Steam Holiday Sale has started. It’ll be live from now until January 2, 2012.
The specials page has jumped from 14+ games on sale to over 100+.
If you’re new to Steam sales, there’s an important thing to remember. There will be tons of games on sale throughout the sale. However, every day there will be a limited number of games listed as daily deals that come with deep discounts. So, the secret is to wait and see if the game(s) you want to buy pops up as a daily deal. If it doesn’t you just buy it during the last day of the sale, which is usually a repeat day. The repeat day is when they re-list a selection of the daily deals again.
There’s publisher packs that come with the entire catalog of games for a publisher, often at a pretty big discount. Usually it’s cheaper to pick up a publisher pack if you’re interested in a few games from a given publisher instead of buying each one separately.
Ouch. Dead island is only $10.19 today, but it was on sale for $19.99 yesterday o_O. (Edit 1: Looks like that was the first price error of the sale. Up to $26.79 now)
I’ll be editing this post with the Day 1 deals so stay tuned…
Props to Kaotik over at AT for his awesome post.

The Great Gift Pile:
- 1. Play games and complete objectives announced each day.
- 2. When you do, you’ll either get a gift from the Great Gift Pile or a lump of coal.
- 3. If you get coal, you can either craft it into a gift from the Great Gift Pile or save your coal up as entries into the Epic Holiday Giveaway on Jan 2nd
- (Check your inventory is one of the objectives for Day 1. People are getting coupons good for 33% off or 50% off a Valve game. Only valid after the sale ends. If there’s no expiration date, I’m using it on CS:GO. DOTA 2 would be another possibility. But only if there’s no exp date.)
Edit 2: Looks like Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City are only available as part of the WB Publisher Pack.
One thing to keep an eye on is the Late-Breaking Game Deals page at Amazon. If you miss out on a daily deal, check the Amazon page because I guarantee they will be matching/beating prices at the Steam Holiday Sale. Steamworks games require Steam regardless of where you purchase from so might as well get the best price.
thanks for the info and explanation, because the steam page is kinda hard to follow.
i cant do any achievement or claim prizes or buy games or even load the page. valve is rly retarded why wont they learn to make cdn more decentralized.
Thanks for the heads up. I guess it’s time to order a new credit card!
BTW, Skyrim is not part of the WB Publisher Pack. It doesn’t seem to be part of any pack.
However “Lord of the Rings: War in the North” is included in the WB pack.
Oh Also for the 50% off a Valve game. It states
“Excludes titles released after January 2nd, 2012.(Valid January 2nd, 2012 through March 1st, 2012)”
